The continent of America is made up of two vast land masses: North America and South America.
They are connected to each other by the Central America isthmus.
North America consists of three countires: Canada, the United States and México.
North America
The United States is the third-largest country in the world and so big that it has a huge variety of natural landscapes and climates.

Who really discovered America?

An Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus, is generally given the credit for discovering America but when Columbus landed, the people greeting him on the beach had arrived some years before.

Columbus can´t even claim to be the first European to set foot in the "New World".
The Native Americans told him the legend of a "fair-skinned, blue-eyed god" who would one day return from across the sea.

Columbus was the first in a long line of people to come to America in the hope of a new better life.
Spanish, French and British settlers set up colonies (which are now known as states) and claimed the territory for themselves.
Most of the British colonies were on the east coast.Thirteen colonies joined forces and declared war against the British (1775-76).

Thomas Jefferson wrote the American Declaration of Independence and the colonies won the War of Independence in 1783 and together they formed the United States of America, with George Washington as the first President.
American Declaration of Independence
Representatives from 12 of the 13 states of the US wrote the American Constitution.Nowadays there are 50 states in the United States.

The US flag, the "Stars and Stripes", is the ultimate symbol of the United States.

The white colour (the vertical stripes) on the flag represent: the purity and innocence.
The red colour on the flag represent: hardiness & valour.
The blue colour represent: vigilance, perseverance & justice.

The 50 stars on the flag represent the 50 states of the United States of America, and the 13 stripes represent the thirteen British colonies.

Native Americans

When Christopher Columbus landed in the Caribbean he thought that he had arrived in India and that people there were "Indians".
Native Americans
The European settlers called them "savages" and passed laws to take their land. Others called them "redskins" because of the red paint the Beothuk tribe used to decorate their bodies.
Each tribe speaks a different language and has different customs and dress.

There are about 150 Native American languages spoken in the US and Canada today and many of the words we use in English come from Native America roots.

Indians and money:
Many Native Americans are living in the poverty and only 50% of young people finish high school with only 1% finish college. These and other factors make it increasingly difficult for Indians to survive in today´s world.
In 1988 the US Govermment passed a law allowing Indians to open casinos on their reservations and for them to be self-suficient and create new jobs for young people but many others criticise it because the casinos bring corruption and make young people Indians forget their traditional values. As Indians make money also gain power and not always the power is used in a good way.

Hollywood was created in 1886 by Harvey Wilcox, a businessman.
Harvey Wilcox hollywood
He realised that the area had a lot to offer: a great climate and location near both the sea and the mountains, a lots of space and the advantage of having a city like Los Angeles close by. He drew a map of his new town and started making roads and building schools and churches.
By 1900 Hollywood had a big population with its own post office, hotel, newspaper and markets.
At the same time the film indutry was starting to make its first films. Now there are nearly 20 film studios and many more TV studios in Hollywood that give work to people every day and the name Hollywood is synonymous with the movie business.

Guns at schools

Almost 90 students and staff have been killed in US schools since 1997 and the vast majority of the shooting were carried out by school children, an example of it is the shooting at Virginia Tech where a student killed 32 people and injured another 17 before killing himself. It was one example of a series of school murders that has once again sparked the debate in the US about guns.

Some people think that people should have even more access to guns because each state has its laws regulating access to guns.
Some states allow people to carry conceled weapons but. Others say that the problem is that people can get guns too easily.

Energy and the Kyoto Protocol

Everything we consume or use where we live, what we ear and the food we eat, how we travel... all requires energy to produce and package, to distribute to shops, to operate, etc. And oil is the main source of energy in thw world.
The US uses more oil per person than any other country and consumption rates are increasing every day.
Oil is fossil fuel which was formed long ago by the carbon-rich remains of dead plants and animals. It is non-renewable, which means if we use it all we can´t create any more.
Burning oil also creates carbon dioxide, which is a greenhouse gas and is one of the primary causes of global warming and climate change.

The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which commits its Parties by setting internationally binding emission reduction targets. The Kyoto Protocol was adopted in Kyoto, Japan, on 11 December 1997.
The Kyoto Protocolll
Recognizing that developed countries are principally responsible for the current high levels of GHG emissions in the atmosphere as a result of more than 150 years of industrial activity, the Protocol places a heavier burden on developed nations under the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities."
