Since at least the 18th century grotesque (or grottoesque) has come to be used as a general adjective for the strange, mysterious, magnificent, fantastic, hideous, incongruous, unpleasant, or disgusting, and even ugly thus is often used to describe weird shapes and distorted forms. This is the reason why I believe Risa Mehme´s drawing and paintings are the perfect representations of it. Another aspect of her type of art is the inclusion of the pastel, cuteness and fantasy world into the grotesque concept.
Risa Mehmet is an artist from Japan. Her work is interesting and very unique. she tends to mix the melancholic with a touch of preciousness. Her work are inspired by “her sadness and some traumatic experiences” a credible reason if we look at her drawings.
I have to point out the colours she uses! such as pastel and dark colours with opaque pigments and a dulled touch Most of her drawings include animals with human faces (for example, deer or rabbits), a natural environment (a surrounding with flowers, plants or even in a wood), and of course, sexual and gore themes.
Risa Mehme's art reminds me a lot of the Brothers Grimm´s stories!
